Japie Hugo is a professional Town Planner with a Building Science degree from the University of Port Elizabeth and a Masters degree in Town & Regional Planning from the University of Stellenbosch. He also holds a Masters in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa.
Initially specialising in greenfields developments ranging from housing to industrial projects, he was promoted to become the City Planner of Johannesburg by 1992. He was responsible for all spatial strategy formulation, urban renewal and planning for housing delivery.
Looking for new challenges, he joined the City Council of Cape Town heading up five departments responsible for land use planning, building permits, the creation of a GIS for Cape Town, local government's public property portfolio and municipal valuations for property tax. Japie was promoted in 2002 to become the first Director of Planning and Environment for the new City of Cape Town - a 2 500 km2 (1000 mile2) metropolitan city with a population of 3,1 million people, a 300 km (190 miles) coastline.
Japie joined Eurocape early in 2005 to head up Development which includes acquisition and disposal strategy, market trend analyses, identification and procurement of development opportunities, project conceptualisation and feasibility studies.
